Membership Report:
We are currently following our 2009 membership plan, which membership chair, Wilson Felder has laid out for us. We have begun to approaching new prospects for new units in Folsom, Somers Point, Hammonton, and Mays Landing. Some promising prospects that we are currently in contact with are Plymouth Place in Hammonton and the Mount Olive Baptist Church. Spring Recruitments are starting to be scheduled for Cub Scouts in the elementary schools in several communities. Kindergartners can officially sign up for Tiger Cubs on June 1st. This is great opportunity to get new kids into the program and get them off to great start by sending them to one of our fun day camps. If you haven't already, please contact your John Brilla to schedule a spring recruitment in your local elementary school.
Finance Report:
The Friends of Scouting campaign is now in full swing. We are currently in the meat of campaign and attempting to reach out to people in our communities to let them know about how Scouting impacts society on an everyday basis. Presentations in each unit have begun and will continue throughout the next couple months to spread the good image of Scouting. If your presentation has not been schedule yet, please reach out and schedule it ASAP! On June 3rd, we are honoring the LeSasso Family with the Good Scout Award and Bill Kennedy with the Whitney M Young Award at a reception at Frog Rock County Club with all proceeds going towards Scouting at the Jersey Shore Council. Tickets for the event are $75.
Program Report:
The commissioner's staff of Atlantic District is looking to beef up to reach out to units that need assistance to provide quality program to their Scouts. Becoming a commissioner is an excellent way to give back not only to Scouting but also to give back to the community. Below is a brief description of a commissioner's role, if you are interested in becoming a commissioner, please contact George Flicker or John Brilla. Generally a light to non boy contact position in Scouting.
The unit commissioner's job is simple - provide a contact point and support to the units he or she serves. The UC will assist with rechartering, Quality Unit, and other "paperwork" issues as well as be a conduit of information on current policies(Council and BSA in general) , current training, and activities. The job involves visits to the unit on their meeting night when needed (or just to show support; does not have to be of long duration) Commissioners also attend meetings 6 times a year and training. The job is flexible and a Unit Scouting background is very helpful but not completely necessary. The commissioner will become familiar with all aspects of Scouting and learn all the various polices and procedures of unit administration. The Commissioner's Service has its own recognition and award structure and is a great way to stay involved in Scouting when a large time commitment is not desired on possible. The Commissioners have a series of manuals which cover all aspects of the job. Commissioners also will work geographically with an Assistant District Commissioner so as to limit travel and on the road time. It is a wonderful opportunity for someone who likes to keep "the machine of Scouting well oiled." Since the Scouting Unit (Pack, Troop, Crew, Ship) is the primary point of program delivery.
