Boy Scouts of America - Jersey Shore Council - Lenape District

Lenape District Webelos Woods

The Annual Lenape District Webelos Woods will take place on the weekend of October 3rd, 4th and 5th at Citta Scout Reservation. Troops and Webelos Den’s will camp together and have a go at some Boy Scout skills. Fire building, cooking, knot tying and more. It’s an opportunity to strengthen the bonds between Webelos and Boy Scouts and help ease the transition between programs. Be sure to check out the upcoming September Roundtables for more information, also find the Information Packets in the TomsRiverServiceCenter kiosk.

Lenape District Fall Membership Plan
We’re nearing the end of the summer season it’s time to gear up for the Fall Round-Up. I’m again sending our easy four step plan towards having the best Fall Round up ever. Again, it’s probably a great idea to share this with your pack committee. We need the information this form is asking for in order to do this fall round-up right. Please make sure someone in every unit gets a hold of this link: http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pdhb19G0n78M5FNSqJxQjDw&email=true, and completes the form.

Step One – Who?
Quite simply we all know we can’t do this Scouting thing alone, we need a team. Each unit in the district is asked to have at least one representative on this team. They’ll be the point person for all things recruitment.  We’ll distribute information about District Round-Up Meetings and School Boy Talks through them. Also they will most likely be the contact person put on flyers and who would be called by parents looking to sign up their child; however, of course we can put a different person on the flyers if you request.

Think about who can help with Boy Talks, who knows about the packs calendar. We all know dynamic den leaders who would probably give an awesome Boy Talk and are capable of talking a parent into attending a membership night. That should be your person.

Have them or someone from your Pack complete the form found at this address: http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pdhb19G0n78M5FNSqJxQjDw&email=true, only one person per each pack needs to complete the form and if you have any problems let us know, rgunsten@jerseyshore-bsa.org, Bob Tweer – rltweer@msn.com, Karen Anderson - kamicrotech@comcast.net.

Step Two – When and Where?
Boy Talks and School Nights
We’re still getting dates from the school to conduct Boy Talks; each school should be scheduled by the end of this week. A Sign-Up night or School Night is something the pack plans and should be just after the Boy Talk. Each pack should be holding a Sign Up night this fall, but a boy can join any day of the year and packs are encouraged to plan multiple sign up nights. Whatever works best for your pack is what we need to use.

Many packs find that a Sign Up night held at their local school works best. Parents know where it is and it’s comfortable, for both boys and parents. But some unit’s meet in well known locations that might work equally as well. You can schedule you School Night now, just let Karen Anderson know, kamicrotect@comcast.net.

  Step Three – How?
At the Sign Up night, there should be plan of action. A short agenda and other useful materials can be found in your unit’s School Night kit (They’ll be distributed in August as well). It is also important that any applications collected at the Sign Up night are turned into the CouncilServiceCenter within 72 hours. Remember boys are not registered until the applications come to the ServiceCenter and the membership and insurance fees are paid. When a parent leaves the sign up night after filling out an application they are assuming their son is registered. Waiting to long, means they are not covered by insurance and should not attend any meetings until they are registered, also, they may miss Boy’s Life issues.

At each Sign Up night a member of the District Committee or Commissioner staff should attend specifically to help you get those boys registered and registered quickly. Make sure you know who your commissioner is, find out by downloading this form: http://www.jerseyshore-bsa.org/mydocuments/lenape_commissioner_telephone_list.pdf.

Step Four – Now!
Now, starts a boy’s journey through Scouting and it may also start a new adult volunteer’s journey. Let’s make sure each new Scout has the best experience possible, through delivering the best program we can and that each new leader has the tools they need to help deliver that program.

Starting now, the district’s training staff has an aggressive training schedule and the goal of the training staff is to assure that every registered adult leader has been trained for their specific leadership position. This September, 9/18 – New Leader Essentials, 9/26 - Tiger, Den & Webelos Leader Specifics all at the CouncilServiceCenter and get all of your Bear and Webelos leaders to OWL training, 10/24. 10/25, 10/26. For more dates visit the Jersey Shore Council website: www.jerseyshore-bsa.org/mydocuments/20082009training.pdf. Also, encourage all of your den leaders to attend the District Cub Roundtable held on the first Wednesday of every month starting September 3rd, 7:30PM at the CouncilServiceCenter; it’s informative, collaborative, useful, and fun.

And for your new Webelos, get them all to Webelos Woods at Citta Scout Reservation, the first weekend in October (10/3, 10/4, 10/5).

DONE!
It’s that easy. Now let’s give every boy a chance to be a Cub Scout. Most want to be, they just need to be told how to join. And remember to have someone from each pack fill out the form located here » http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pdhb19G0n78M5FNSqJxQjDw&email=true. This will help us build the district’s Membership Team as well as give us some quick background information towards having successful fall recruitment.
