National Estuary Program Provides Funding
(TomsRiver, NJ, March 26, 2008) – The Jersey Shore Council, Boy Scouts of America, has completed a ¾ mile Nature Activity Trail at the Joseph A. Citta Scout Reservation with funding from the Barnegat Bay National Estuary Program’s Public Participation and Education Minigrant program. The grant provided for construction of the trail, educational signage and activity backpacks that correspond to each of the 12 educational stations.
The goal of the Nature Activity Trail is to provide an outdoor experience to youth and their families that encourages education and understanding of our natural resources within the Barnegat Bay Watershed. The Nature Activity Trail was constructed by volunteers and is open to the Scouts and adult volunteers who use the Citta Scout Reservation and to the general public by appointment.
“We’re very pleased the Barnegat Bay National Estuary Program supported the Jersey Shore Boy Scouts on this project,” said Robert C. Warner, President, Jersey Shore Council. “The new Nature Activity Trail is a welcome addition to our camp and will surely provide much needed education about our local ecology to visitors.”
Each of the 12 educational stations addresses a theme that is important to local ecology. Those themes include: water pollution, endangered species, local birds, indigenous trees and plants, erosion, insects, fish and turtles, what is an estuary?, history of BarnegatBay, and more. Activity backpacks will include supplies such as crayons for leaf and bark rubbings, binoculars, a bug box viewer, field guides for birds and trees, telescoping dip net and an electronic bird song identifier. Backpacks and trail maps are located at the camp office. For more information or to schedule an appointment to use the Nature Activity Trail, contact the Joseph A. Citta Scout Reservation at 609-698-2855.
