NJ, January 22, 2008) – Augustus “Gus” C. Harmon, Vice President, Jersey Shore
Council Boy Scouts of America, received the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
award presented by Atlantic County Government during a celebration in King’s
honor January 18. Gus has long been active in the AtlanticCounty
area serving in the educational field in Pleasantville and the Greater Egg
Harbor Regional School system for 29 years.
Gus further contributed to his
community as a member of the Pleasantville City Council and legislative aid to
William J. Hughes, former US
Congressman and Ambassador to Panama.
Gus is also a successful businessman having owned and/or operated a motel, a
campground, a nursing school and a leasing company.
His tenure with Scouting includes more
than 30 years of service as Lighthouse District Commissioner, Unit
Commissioner, President of Scoutreach, Assistant Scoutmaster, Committee Chair,
and Lighthouse District Activities Director. Gus has served on committees that
hosted the Camporee Under the Big Lights and the NJ State Police Camporee, as
well the committee to establish the AtlanticScoutServiceCenter in EggHarborTownship.

celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., than to recognize Gus,”
said Jersey Shore Council President Robert C. Warner. “Gus has always been a
true friend to his community and an inspiration to youth.”
